Real Family Fun at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo
I had the wonderful opportunity to visit Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo. My son and I last visited somewhere around 2007 when my husband was in graduate school and had a Saturday class.
I remember visiting Lowry Park Zoo with my best friend for the first time about 1986 before the zoo was renovated in 1987. We’ve been back many times, but as our lives have gotten busy, we visit less often.
One of the new, upgraded areas is Wallaroo Station, a recently renovated 4.5 acre Australian themed children’s zoo. Parents will be pleased with the water park, shaded seating, food and snacks, and even an area for mom’s to have some downtime with their littlest ones.
The kiddos will love the kiddie rides, games, petting zoo, and the up-close and personal with the animals. They will walk in the same area where wallabies roam free. They’ll see koalas, emus, singing dogs, and enormous bats.
Things have changes quite a bit since our last visit. The skyride has closed. That was a favorite of mine and a nice way to go to the other side of the park without walking. But, there’s a new ride called Expedition Africa Guided Safari, where you ride through the African exhibit on a tram with a tour guide telling you all about the animals you’re seeing.
Besides African animals, you’ll see animals from Asia, primates, and from North America as well. One of the highlights was getting to see the clouded baby leopard, Mowgli, having some play time with his handler. As a matter of fact, there were a bunch of baby animals – pigmy hippo, elephants, and chimps. You can see some baby elephants playing in the pool.
