All-Natural Essential Oil Vapor Rub in 3 Simple Steps
We’re in the thick of cold and flu season here in Florida and I’m betting everywhere else in the US. While I generally stay pretty healthy, this year I got slammed with a cold – body aches, stuffed nose, and a low-grade fever. A cold is a virus and taking an antibiotic won’t get you any better any quicker.

WebMD says this about a cold:
Symptoms usually start between 1 and 3 days after you get infected with a cold virus. They typically last for about 3 to 7 days. By then the worst is over, but you may feel stuffed up for a week or more. You’re most contagious during the first 3 days that you’re sick, but it’s still possible to spread it during the first week.
So, besides taking an extra shot of NingXia Red with Thieves oil in it applying helpful essential oils, and sucking on Thieves lozenges, I wanted to use a chest rub. The problem with that mentholated chest rub in the blue jar that we all grew up with it that it’s petroleum-based. And that’s not all! It can actually cause respiratory issues with younger children.
Bruce Rubin, M.D., professor and vice chair of pediatrics at Wake Forest University School of Medicine said this:
The ingredients in Vicks VapoRub can irritate the airways and increase mucus production. The effect isn’t huge, says Dr. Rubin, but it can be significant in infants and young children (under 2) who have very small airways to begin with. And when those pipes are already inflamed from a cold or other infection, a little bit of extra inflammation and mucus may narrow them quickly and severely.
What’s a mom to do with the kiddos who are having a hard time breathing now that the blue jar is gone from the medicine cabinet? I have an all-natural, safe, and effective option for ALL members of your family. While I’m home sick I really don’t want to take out the mixer and make a huge mess in the kitchen and this recipe fits the bill.
The shea butter is rather pliable but I put both it and the very hard cocoa butter in the microwave to make it easier to manipulate. The shea butter was good after about a minute but the cocoa butter took nearly 2 minutes and it was both liquid and solid. This made mixing even easier because I thought that I’d need a mixer to combine everything. Sweet!
After mixing up those two ingredients and making sure it wasn’t too hot, I dropped in my oils. Here’s what I used:
- Peppermint: analgesic (pain relief), antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral properties
- Lemon: antiviral, antioxidant, and refreshing properties
- Lavender: analgesic, antihistamine, anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory, and sedative properties
- Tea Tree (melaleuca alternifolia): analgesic, antibacterial, inti-infectious, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, decongestant, expectorant, and immune-stimulant
- Eucalyptus Radiata (or eucalyptus globulus): antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and expectorant properties
You can add RC or Thieves oil, a powerful antiviral blend as well. I didn’t because it’s not recommended for people with seizures (eucalyptus globulus isn’t recommend as well) and that’s something we have to watch in our house. I’ll just add drops of Thieves to what I apply to my feet. Using this rub on your feet as well as you chest and neck assures that you’ll get the full benefits of this great rub. You may what to see how strong this is and make a batch with fewer drops of oils for your little ones.
Once everything was really well combined, I used a small spatula to put it into my jar. It was just enough for one jar. I made 5 individual containers with a one-time use amount for friends to try too. After letting it sit for about an hour it was pretty solid and no longer runny. I used it before it hardened up without an issue. You can keep this all-natural vapor rub in your cabinet out of the sun for at least a year.
- 1/4 cup shea butter
- 1/4 cup cocoa butter
- 20 drops Peppermint essential oil
- 10 drops Lemon essential oil
- 15 drops Lavender essential oil
- 10 drops Tea Tree (melaleuca alternifolia) essential oil
- 25 drops Eucalyptus Radiata essential oil
- Also, 15 drops Thieves essential oil
- Soften the shea butter.
- Soften the cocoa butter to half melted and half nearly solid.
- Mix well.
- Add the essential oils.
- Mix very well.
- Transfer mixture into an airtight jar.
- Rub on chest, neck, and feet.
- Only use 100% pure and therapeutic essential oils like Young Living.
