Homemade All-Natural Deodorant

I recently did something that I never thought in a million years that I’d do.  I made my own homemade all-natural deodorant.  Crazy, isn’t it?

After having  quite a few women in my circle be diagnosed with breast cancer, I started to get concerned about what I could do to keep my chances of this disease low.

Most antiperspirant worries center on the active ingredient — an aluminum-based compound that temporarily plugs the sweat ducts and prevents you from perspiring. – WebMD

When I started using essential oils, some women that I work with at Oh Lardy posted a recipe for a Homemade Deodorant for Sensitive Skin.  After having some trouble with another natural formula, because of the high baking soda content, I was encouraged when I saw this recipe.

I only has five ingredients and is super-easy to make – 5 tablespoons  coconut oil, 6 tablespoons  arrowroot powder, 1 tablespoon  baking soda, 2 tablespoons  bentonite clay, and 10-15 drops of the  essential oil of your choice.  I chose lemongrass, because it’s antifungal and antibacterial.  One test even showed that lemongrass “completely inhibited all MRSA growth” (Chao S, et al., 2008).  You can purchase this and all your essential oils  HERE.

So, I gathered up all of the necessary ingredients and measured them all out so that it was easier to put together.

After measuring everything out, I put them in a metal mixing bowl and used a small spatula. Because the dry ingredients are pretty fine, they will fly all over the place if you’re not careful when you mix them.

Once it was combined, which only takes a couple of minutes of hand mixing, it makes this doughy sort of mixture.  I was able to us the little spatula to put it into jars.  The recipe makes about 4 ounces of deodorant.  I had 2 – 1 ounce jars and 1 – 2 ounce jar.  I’m keeping one jar on my dresser for daily use and I placed 2 in the fridge to keep it fresh until I’m ready to use it.

What do we think about this homemade all-natural deodorant?  I love it!  I’ve tried manufactured all-natural deodorant and I felt like something was missing.  It wasn’t that I smelled bad, it just didn’t do the job.

The homemade all-natural deodorant that I made was wonderful!  No questionable smells.  After about a 3/4 mile walk to the Post Office in 85 degree temperatures with a “real feel temp” of 101, THERE IS NO STINK!  After a 15 hour workday, there is no smell.

The real test, however, was my husband.  I didn’t even ask him if he wanted to use the deodorant, he offered to use it.  Fifteen hours later for him?  No smell and complete satisfaction.  So much so that he wants to use it every day!  That’s the true test.

Do we recommend it?  That’s a big, YES MA’AM!
