Choose Joy 2015
For many of you following me at Sandy’s P.O.V., you didn’t know me in my past blog life when I was blogging at Uncompromising!. I posted a lot of personal stuff and about my faith. I was reading a lot of Christian blogs and I found this blogger, Sara (click to see her website), who just spoke to my heart.
Unfortunately, I was reading her posts at the very end of her life. She was 38 years old and living with a disease called ankylosing spondylosis. Interestingly enough, I had a friend who was living with A.S. as well. But my friend, Phyllis, wasn’t really living. She was willing herself to die and on 12/31/2010 she did.
When I say Sara was “living” with A.S., she was living every day. She wasn’t waiting to die. She and Phyllis chose to live their lives in very different ways. I don’t want you to think that I’m being critical of Phyllis. Because I am not. What I did learn was that we can choose to live a joyful life or a miserable life. I want to choose joy.
After Sara died on 9/24/2011, her friends wrote a lot about her and about how she helped them walk through life. One blogger got together Sara’s doodles. There were a bunch of “Choose Joy” doodles in her handwriting (and block print) and people were getting them as tattoos and I wanted one. I picked my tattoo design pretty quickly, but sat on it until 2012, when my son turned 18 and wanted to get his first tattoo. He and I went to get our tattoos together in May 2012 (click to see my 1st post). It was my second one.
Fast forward to October 2012 (click to see my 2nd post), and I was doing security for a large concert at our church. My mom and I were assigned to be with Lindsey McCaul, the only woman traveling on the tour. She asked me about my tattoo and as I was talking about it, she said that she knew Sara’s story and had been working with a songwriter to write a song about Sara or the choose joy motto. You can see my picture with Lindsey HERE.
Fast forward again to 7/22/2015 and an email that I found in my inbox from Laura, Sara’s sister. I can’t begin to tell you how excited I was to hear about Laura’s project – Choose Joy: Finding Hope and Purpose When Life Hurts – Sara’s book written by Mary Carver. It’s due to be released 1/5/2016, but you can pre-order it now.
I, also, recommend that you check out Choose Joy Foundation – The Sara Gitz Frankl Memorial Foundation to find out more about Sara, Laura, and the rest of the Frankl family. Reserve your book today! I promise you, you won’t regret it. There was something special about Sara and her words and her life continues to speak volumes nearly 4 years after she went home to be with the Lord.
